Beyond Broadening Participation in Graduate Education and STEMM Organizations

April 14, 2023

A webinar series and discussion

Join the National Academies and Inclusive Graduate Education Network (IGEN) in a collaborative exploration of NASEM’s latest report on Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations as well as IGEN’s newest research findings.

Choose from March 28 or March 29. Both days will begin with a brief panel presentation from NASEM leaders and IGEN researchers. Presentations and discussions will focus on the experience and redesign of gatekeeping structures, especially in a changing legal landscape.

  • March 28 (3:00-4:30pm ET) is for PhD students. Participants will reflect on critically oriented research that examines how Black women navigate career transitions and academic evaluations. Attendees will leave with tools to tell their own stories and recognize their excellence in pursuing graduate school and postdoctoral opportunities. In addition to the panel, Don Dixon, PhD student and founder of BLack Academic Support and Advisory gRoup (BLASAR), will offer remarks.
  • March 29 (3:30-5:00pm ET) is for faculty, administrators, and other full-time professionals. Participants will delve into the redesign of gatekeeping systems to prioritize transparency and student development while reducing the risk that minoritized scholars experience a bifurcation of their personal and professional identities. In addition to the panel, Keivan Stassun, professor and co-founder of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters to PhD Bridge Program will offer remarks.
