The Alliance for Better College Teaching (ABCT) believes that every college student deserves the very best teaching. ABCT envisions a higher education system where every student experiences evidence-based teaching practices in every course. In this vision:

• College teaching excellence is the norm and is grounded in research with proven effectiveness;
• Faculty are hired, mentored, rewarded and supported for enacting evidence-based teaching in their institutions and in their disciplines;
• Graduate students are prepared to teach using evidence-based practices; and
• The future of higher education is more aligned with the evolving needs of students and society.

In the summer of 2024, we convened national higher education experts — leaders of institutions, associations and state systems as well as researchers and policymakers, including USC Pullias Center's co-director Adrianna Kezar — to design a comprehensive strategy to advance teaching excellence at scale. Kezar currently serves on ABCT's leadership council.  

In 2025, the ABCT leadership council used the feedback from the convening to gain momentum and launch the strategy. The ABCT strategy is led by a group of experts that has been working together to advance teaching excellence at scale. The strategy is also co-designed and executed by the Alliance for Better College Teaching coalition and the Better College Teaching Network (BCTN), both launching in 2026.

The ABCT coalition includes organizations that work on every facet of advancing college teaching in higher education — from professional development, policy advocacy, research and development, institutional networks, to disciplinary and other higher education associations. The BCTN includes institutions committed to college teaching excellence that will guide and pilot the strategy. Combined, these ABCT efforts broaden and deepen support for advancing teaching excellence and help partners see an opportunity to build capacity and elevate student success by scaling teaching excellence.
