Mid-Atlantic Teaching Faculty Alliance: Fostering the Advancement of VITAL Faculty Through a Cross-Institutional Network

This brief is centered on the Mid-Atlantic Teaching Faculty Alliance (MATFA). A 2025 finalist of the Delphi Award, and located in the Philadelphia area, it is a decentralized grassroots organization that brings together VITAL faculty from different colleges and universities in the Northeast. This innovative cross-institutional network aims to support pedagogical effectiveness, professional growth, and equitable working conditions for VITAL faculty. Institutional change to better support VITAL faculty happens in isolation, and many VITAL faculty have little awareness of the heterogeneity of policies and practices at other institutions. MATFA leverages its cross-institutional network to support the “cross-pollination” of equitable policies across departments, colleges, and campuses. These policies are related to salary, teaching load, parental leave, service expectations, voting rights in shared governance, contract lengths, classroom observations, and promotion pathways.
